
If you've recently shopped for an air conditioner or a heat pump, you've probably seen or heard the term SEER rating. It commonly pops up on spec sheets, in sales pitches, and on the unit's yellow EnergyGuide label. It's one of the most important numbers in the buying decision process, but it's not always explained in plain terms.

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. Simply put, it measures how much cooling output your system produces in relation to the amount of electricity it uses over a cooling season. The formula works like this:
SEER = total cooling output (BTUs)/ total energy used (watt-hours)
The higher the number, the more cooling you get for every dollar you spend on electricity. A SEER rating of 20 is far more efficient than one with a rating of 13. Both units may be capable of cooling the same home, but they aren't equal in terms of efficiency.
In 2023, the industry made a shift from SEER to a new standard. That standard, called SEER2, uses more realistic testing conditions. It uses external static pressure to better reflect how a system works once it's installed, rather than being tested in a lab.
If you're comparing older equipment to a new system, don't assume the numbers line up. They won't, not exactly anyway. A SEER2 rating of 14.3, for example, is about equivalent to the old SEER 15 minimum. When you compare newer systems, make sure you're comparing SEER2 to SEER2. Don't mix the two standards.
Efficiency ratings matter across the board, but in Florida they matter more than usual. Tallahassee summers can be brutally hot, and they're longer than in most of the country. That means your AC system runs for a larger portion of the year and for extended stretches.
A system's efficiency rating gets multiplied by every hour it runs, and here in North Florida, that's a lot of hours. A few extra SEER points on a system that runs constantly for 6 months of the year can make a meaningful difference in your utility bill.
Along with the new SEER2 ratings, federal standards for efficiency also shifted. Florida's climate zone requires a higher minimum efficiency standard than cooler areas of the country. Here in the Southeast, most residential split systems must meet a minimum SEER2 rating of 14.3. Higher for certain types of systems. Chances are your older unit falls well below that standard.
It's reasonable to assume that the highest SEER rating would be the most financially sound decision. But this is not universally true. Higher-SEER systems cost more upfront, and the payback period depends on several factors: how much you run your system, your local electricity rates, and how long you plan to stay in your home.
For homeowners who plan to stay put, or those with higher cooling demands, a higher SEER system is a good choice. It will often pay for itself well within the equipment's lifespan. For others, a mid-range system may be more practical, financially speaking. It's worth discussing these factors with a professional before you make a purchase.
